Eric Mastro

Protocol internals, on-chain markets, and the tooling in between. Nineteen years, from enterprise .NET to peer-to-peer storage. Drawn to solving problems that make the world a better place, and to building tools that developers love to use.

Until September 2026

Engineering lead, Logos Storage.

A privacy-preserving decentralised storage protocol serving a community of about 7,500. Led the marketplace team through design, threat modelling, implementation and a public testnet, then set technical direction across protocol, contracts, interop and documentation.

Before that: nineteen years of systems software. Eight in peer-to-peer networking and Ethereum infrastructure at Status and Codex; eleven before that building enterprise platforms in the .NET world. Production code in Nim, Solidity, TypeScript, Go, C, and C++, and still more pull requests reviewed than opened.

How I work

One feature, end-to-end

From research proposal, through to design, epic breakdown, cross-repository implementation, testing, and specification. See an example →

Mechanism design

Slot reservations

Uncapped competition meant many providers downloading the same content for a single payout, and a lucrative request could DDoS the client that posted it. Capping reservations fixed both. Shipped, with an adversarial analysis covering six named attacker classes and a written record of every mechanism rejected along the way. Read the design →

Protocol design

On-chain marketplace

A storage market where strangers pay strangers to keep data alive: threat modelling and mitigation, incentive and collateral design, then planning, implementation, testing and exploit preparedness. Includes the published protocol specification and a public research repository. Also: a per-state recoverability analysis giving every state in the sales machine a defined outcome under crash, power loss and asynchronous cancellation.

Gas economics

10× cheaper state restoration

Two competing on-chain designs, built and benchmarked rather than argued about. Worst-case slot-freeing fell from 3,115,596 to 302,584 gas. The report priced the difference in euros at live rates and ended the debate. Read the analysis →

Project leadership

Marketplace to Logos Storage

Twelve epics breaking a roadmap into workstreams across two repositories. A year of weekly programme updates published to the public roadmap, a delivery board run from planning through launch, and a public testnet that reached roughly a hundred participants.

Developer tooling

Tools other engineers live in

Embark, an Ethereum development framework: 263 pull requests authored, 378 reviewed, and a plugin ecosystem spanning security analysis, Plasma chains and zkSNARKs. nimv, a Nim toolchain manager that stops you installing a binary your OS cannot run, shipped through Homebrew, Chocolatey and apt. nim-serde and nim-ethers, the serialisation and contract-interaction libraries the whole stack is built on.

Engineering Lead

2 direct reports, 3 indirect · Remote
202 commits · 95 PRs authored · 75 reviewed

Technical direction and delivery for the storage protocol. Led the strategic pivot from an on-chain marketplace to gossip-based altruistic replication, ran cross-organisation requirements gathering with the Waku and Status Desktop teams, and acted as temporary lead for the whole team through the Codex to Logos Storage transition.

2024–2025Codex

Marketplace Team Lead

4 direct reports · Remote
197 commits · 118 PRs authored · 186 reviewed

Led the team building the on-chain storage market: requests, slot filling, zero-knowledge proof verification, validators, slashing and repair. Set the half-year engineering programme against measurable reliability, gas and latency targets, and ran the Arbitrum L2 evaluation.

2021–2024Codex

Senior Distributed Networking Engineer

Remote
314 commits · 147 PRs authored · 147 reviewed

Core contributor to the protocol node in Nim: peer discovery, content-addressed block storage, erasure coding and storage proofs. Adapted discv5 into the project's DHT, and authored nim-ethers and nim-serde.

2020–2021Status

Senior Qt and Nim Engineer

Remote
188 commits · 176 PRs authored · 144 reviewed

Desktop client features in Nim, C++, Qt and QML across status-app, status-go and StatusQ: communities, channels, wallet history, ENS validation and a paid sticker market. Also work on DOtherSide and nimqml, the Nim to C++ FFI bridge letting a Qt application be driven by a Nim codebase, and on nim-sqlcipher, the encrypted store holding user data at rest.

2018–2020Status

Senior JavaScript / TypeScript Engineer, Embark

Remote
738 commits · 260 PRs authored · 382 reviewed

Core contributor to the Embark developer framework and its plugin ecosystem. Authored swarm-api, and presented the framework at conferences across four continents.
